Born in 1818
Reigned from 1863 – 1906

From from the relatively humble conditions at Glücksborg Castle, near Flensborg Fjord, Prince Christian came to Copenhagen where he ascended the throne after his predecessor, Frederik VII, had died childless.

Christian IX and his wife Queen Louise (1817 – 1898) made a huge impact on many other royal houses as four of their six children eventually found themselves on the thrones of Europe. His eldest son became Frederik VIII of Denmark, Princess Alexandra became Queen of England, Princess Dagmar was the Empress of Russia and Prince Wilhelm became King of Greece.

King Christian IX gradually earned the title of "Father-in-Law of all Europe".
